Where the gem in my emerald ring comes from.
The emerald ring I just purchased contains a beautiful emerald, one of the most precious stones in the beryl group of gemstones. I’ve always been a fan of green, as my eyes are bright green. And this special emerald ring highlights my eyes in amazing ways.
The history of the emerald in my emerald ring is interesting. The actual name emerald comes from the Greek word “smaragdos” which means ‘green gemstone.’ These jewels boast an amazing green color that is truly unparalleled in the gem world.
But have you ever wondered where emeralds are found? Shortly after falling in love with my emerald ring, I researched emeralds online and found a lot about where they come from. If you’re looking for an emerald ring, or just love facts about emeralds, you might like to know that Colombia is most the most famous source for these treasures, but in fact, emeralds have been mined in many locations throughout the world. In fact, recent decades have seen production increase from new deposits in South America and Africa.
Brazil has emerald deposits as well. And an emerald ring that features one of these gems boasts a lighter color than an emerald ring with a Columbian emerald. The color of the Brazilian stones tend to be a yellow-green and is often relatively free of inclusions.
I feel lucky, I think, in the fact that the emerald in my emerald ring actually is from one of the most famous emerald mines of all, found in Egypt. These mines are known as Mons Smaragdus (Emerald Mountains), and they were worked to produce emeralds as early as 2000 B.C. The mines were also worked during later centuries but they were abandoned after the Spaniards discovered emeralds in Colombia in 1545.
